Watching cricket (SA are in trouble 150/6), idly surfing the web and thinking about next year. The what, how and why of what will in all probability turn into some form of New Years resolutions. The one thing that I’m 100% committed to is leaving Facebook. Except for having re-connected with some old friends I see no value in it what so ever. The fact that I can’t at any stage delete my account and all data associated with me is the deal breaker.

It was probably neatly explained to me in the fine print that every super poke, vampire conversion, three word story, super wall post, photo comment, group joined/left, garden, fish tank are the property of Facebook. Somebody got too caught up in the “All your base are belong to us” phenomenon. The data that I, and all my “friends”, create never really belonged to us.

I was a member of Orkut and had just left when I started to pick up on the hype about Facebook. Habibti actually joined long before I did and this was the final catalyst for me joining, but since day one the whole experience has not sat right with me. Anyway, long story cut short, I started thinking about using WordPress as a basis for a social network. Creating something more person centric and that will allow for freedom. I’ve been mulling this over for a while now and just last week I came across this article by Anne Zelenka talking about DiSo. Reading this and digging around some more has gotten me very excited and I’ll keep up with the project and see where it goes. I may even report back here on what I find and think.

And still SA toils trying to prevent the follow on. oy vey!
