So I’ve taken the plunge and got Vista Home Premium 64 bit for my new computer. I ran my old XP Pro for a while and had no real complaint beyond not being able to use the full 4GB of RAM I have. I was only able to use 3.25GB. And I’d once again exceeded the number of installs allowed for the XP Pro OEM. So I called the shop where I’d bought the new computer and asked if I still qualified for an OEM of Vista and they said not a problem.
Truth be told, the main reason was not being able to use all 4GB and using a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit computer didn’t seem right to me. I tried Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64 bit for a few days but found that my computer ran a little hot and noisy, so this was all the justification I needed to get Vista. I swore I’d never buy into the Microsoft cycle of upgrading, but there you go. I’m weak and I like shiny new toys, so on Thursday I got Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
And I wasn’t able to use all 4GB of RAM damit!! I had it, I wanted to use it. I wanted to flaunt it. I wanted to look at resource utilisation and see I was using 3 odd GB with still more to go.
The scenario in my head ran something like this:
Young man dressed in his best old jeans is on the prowl, hopping from bar to bar telling every young lady that he has the mythical 9". When one eventually bites and takes him back to her place he is forced to drop trow and produce the goods. She sits on her couch and tilts her head to one side and says "But, that looks like 6" to me? I’ve been around and I know 6" when I see 6"." The young man is forced to admit that he had to leave 3" at home because his trusty lucky jeans couldn’t accommodate them. It was an assault on my manhood. I wanted to be able to sit in polite company and say "I have 4GB and I know how to use it" And should my bluff ever be called I will not be left feeling lacking.
Then Google released Chrome. It came with all kids of nifty features and was supposed to be blazingly fast. Worth a look, so I downloaded but only got to installing on Friday evening while Habibti was taking in some shows. Looks good, and the Incognito mode looks like it has some uses. I just gave it a spin and decided to look at Facebook. Doesn’t seem like the two are compatible?
I’ll be digging around to see what I can find on this. I immediately fired up Firefox 3.0.1 and was able to access Facebook no problem. Seems to be a Chrome problem, or maybe a Vista and Chrome problem?
